specification | [Heart in a Knot] We're on the cusp of something (w/ Tony)

"Hey now. Don't do that. It happens. The world was saved. That's what matters." It was what he'd keep telling himself without thinking about it because when he closed his eyes, he saw the world rushing to him, that other world floating away as he fell to Earth.

"I'm... Just off Broadway? Look at that. Me just off Broadway. I should be up in lights," he said, pausing. "How did you get here so fast?"

Arthur's eyebrow rose though Tony couldn't see it. "It happens? For most, it doesn't happen, you realize," he said, though Tony wasn't just most. Neither of them were for that matter.

"Too many planes to count," he said before leaning toward the front of the car and giving the driver directions of where to go instead of his flat like originally planned. "If you want to be picked up, then you'll have to stop in one place long enough to do so. Or I can just meet you there."

"Yeah well, since when am I most? I thought that my uniqueness is part of what you loved about me," he teased, sounding more like himself. He could do this. He could fake normal. Well, as normal as normal was for Tony Stark anyways.

"Well, see the thing is... I'm in the suit. The suit currently doesn't fly," he admitted. "Something about pressure and atmospheres and crashing to Earth. Jarvis says I abuse it."

There was a sound. "He does abuse it, Mister Arthur. As well you know."

"And now I'm standing here, walking along in the suit, and my AI is giving me hell."

"It's a good part," Arthur admitted with a laugh and settled in again while the driver changed directions toward the tower instead of Arthur's flat.

He shook his head and rest his head back on the seat, not able to help but smile at the familiar banter between Tony and Jarvis. It almost felt reassuring, almost normal, dare he say it. "I would imagine crashing down onto the surface would do wonders to a suit like that. Gravity and everything."

Arthur paused and looked out the window. "Meet you at the tower then?"

Tony continued on, not even sure what to think about this. Life had just changed, violently, but things that mattered remained the same. "Yeah, it's done it's damage. I'll have it back up and running by tomorrow, though."

There was a crackle. "I would say another three days minimum, Sir. Five with Mister Arthur in town."

"Fine. Five. The tower it is. I warn you. It's missing... a large chunk."

"Three floors, Mister Arthur."

"Same difference."

"So, it'll be back up and running as soon as you can given the circumstances," Arthur surmised. It was Tony Stark and Arthur had become less shocked by what the man could do with his share brilliance.

His eyebrows rose. "Is there at least a bed somewhere that isn't damaged," he asked with an amused tone. He slept for a living, sure, but even he was reaching his limit on how much he could take. Especially knowing that soon, he'd get to see the one man that he had been thinking about for months.

Tony snorted. "Come on. It's three floors out of the largest tower in the city."

"Which was what made it a target, Sir."

"I can shut you down for the remainder of the day, Jarvis."

He shook his head. "There's plenty of rooms. It was the living spaces that were damaged but I can get the lab rooms set up in an hour to work as bedrooms for now."

Arthur bit out a laugh and shook his head to himself. "Then we are set," he said. It didn't matter to him where, so long as there was a comfortable place and they were safe.

Throughout the entire ordeal that was getting off airplanes and getting back onto other airplanes then being transferred to private cars, Arthur sincerely hoped all of his baggage had made it. If it didn't, he would be making some phone calls.

Normally in New York City, it would take a half hour or more to get to the location they needed just with the sheer number of people and cars on the road. This time though, it still took a while but it wasn't so much the traffic as it was the lack of traffic, and instead the cop cars and the detour signs. It was weird, growing up in the city, to see it like this - where hardly anyone was out on the streets. Tomorrow, people would gather together to start the clean up process but for now, it was as though everyone agreed to stay in doors. Or, as he realistically knew, the officials were telling everyone to stay in doors for the time being and let them do their jobs.

Finally, they made it as close as they could to the tower and Arthur got out, thanking the driver (and his boss) for the transportation. He found all of his luggage (including bags and PASIV(s) in the trunk and hauled them out before shutting the trunk and turning to look at the tower. He knew how hard Tony and Pepper (and the massive amount of people/crews) were on the project and to see it in the state it was... well, according to reviews about the disaster, it could have fared much worse.

"Anyone home," he called out as he walked through the doors, setting his things down onto the floor next to him.

It wasn't Tony that Arthur first sees though as he comes in the door. It's someone more imposing with an eye patch over one eye and leather jacket wafting behind him as he strode across the lobby.

"And who the hell are you," he demanded, before holding up his hand. "You know what, I don't want to know. You're the friend. Right. Coulson told me about you. You get him in trouble and I'm down one Iron Man suit and you'll find yourself in SHIELD safe keeping," he said, not giving Arthur a chance to talk before he was out the door.

In his wake was one Pepper Potts.

"Ignore him. Fury's caught in a media nightmare and it's all on him because he won't let the Avengers deal with it," she said, sweeping him into a hug.

He had heard of Fury of course but it was nice to finally have a face to put with the name. Even with all of his own research, it was one thing that he hadn't been able to come across. Still he blinked and raised an eyebrow, not even having time to answer before the man was out of the building.

"He has met Tony right? He hardly needs me to get himself into trouble," he said, looking at Pepper with an amused look. He returned the hug after a split second. "It's good to see you, Pepper."

And he meant it, too.

"Has he come in yet?"

She laughed at that, nodding. "But you're not an Avenger. You don't have the suit. He puts up with a lot from Tony for that suit, and now that he's a member of the Avengers, he plans to take advantage of that. You may well become the scapegoat."

She didn't even hesitate, hugging him tight. "Tony tells me your mission went well too. I'm glad. Everyone back safe," she asked, nodding at his question and nodding towards the elevators. "Come on. He's up on the floor where he got thrown out the window," she said, nose wrinkling up. "I think he's wallowing over his tower," she admitted.

"But the elevators still work so at least we don't have to walk," she said, pushing the button. The doors opened automatically.

Although he knew Pepper didn't mean to, Arthur inwardly bristled at the idea of being anyone's scapegoat again. "We'll see about that," he said by means of response.

He nodded and picked up his bags before walking with her toward the elevator. "It went well and everyone is where they should be," he said and sent her a little smile. "Of course he would be. It was a tower with his name written on it, literally."

Arthur walked inside and leaned against the back of the elevator. "How are you holding up?"

She laughed then. "Oh trust me, Tony won't let that happen. He likes being his own scapegoat after all. He works hard at making it a career. You know, because he doesn't have enough of them."

She laughed then, glancing sidelong at him. "He plans to make it worse. He started with it last night. They're going to love it." They being the team and not the government, or the city, or the Asgardians.

"I am..." She turned to face him, her expression faltering only a moment. "I'm carrying on. It's what you do when you live in this tower. Try and remember that. It makes it easier to get through," he admitted.

Arthur chuckled. That much was true. Tony was definitely not afraid of taking his own fall. "Of course," he said, shooting her a smile.

He nodded, not at all surprised by that when it came down to it. "I suppose I'll have to ask the man himself what he's planning." He was curious. He hadn't met this team yet but that was unsurprising considering he had been on a job on the duration of everything happening here.

Arthur watched Pepper's reactions closely, catching that falter of her expression. He wasn't the person that could understand a person's psychological reactions in response with their physical but he knew Pepper enough now that it didn't surprise him that this was affecting her. He nodded again. "It's how I've had to do to survive in the business I'm in as well," he assured her.

To be honest, he was a bit at a loss as to what to do next after Inception. At the same time, he was looking forward to a little time off. At some point, he'd look for a job...hear talk about a job and more than likely take it. For now...he'd just enjoy this time off with Tony and lay low until he knew for sure whether Inception took and see to it that everyone was paid what they needed to be paid.

"Arthur, know this," she said, caught between her place as Pepper Potts and her place as a friend to both the man in the elevator with her and with the man who they were going to see.

"Life here will never be easy. Even the best of days are a problem with a lot going on that most couldn't handle, no matter how hard they tried. You are a man beyond most, and that you're the one that Tony chose says a lot about you. He wouldn't bring anyone else in here and risk them unless he thought they could handle everything he does, all that he is. I think he's right though. You are strong enough to be here, and that's a good thing."

He felt a little smile curl on his lips when she admitted that he was beyond most others and there were reasons Tony had chose him. He nodded. "I can't imagine living here would be easy by any means - Avengers or no Avengers," he admitted with a little smile, looking at her. "He is Tony Stark after all."

There was a warmth to his voice when he said Tony's name. Something that he couldn't seem to help at all. "Thank you, Pepper," he said. It meant a lot that she supported them and liked him. If she didn't, no doubt it could be an issue.

She chuckled softly. "It was madness before, now with the Avengers it'll only get crazier. Now he's considering turning the tower into a place for all the Avengers. I guess if it's going to be a diva tower, it should be for them all," she said, smiling.

The doors opened as the elevator came to a stop. She smiled and nodded. "Thank you, Arthur. I'm sorry you've been through all you have today. Or what we've all been through. He's just down the hall."

Arthur shook his head. She didn't need to apologize to him. He did what he had to for the job and for what he needed and wanted to do. "Thank you. I hope that you get some rest tonight," he said, looking at her before leaving the elevator with a nod and heading down the hall with his bags.

"Quite the welcome I received downstairs. Think your boss thinks I'm going to take advantage and lead you to the dark side," he said, walking into the room Tony was, setting his things down. Hell, but he was a sight for sore eyes.

The doors closed, leading Pepper away to wherever she was staying currently in the tower.

Tony was standing before the virtual screen, working on the levels of the Tower so that he could work out the details. Shooting ranges, practice rooms, something to contain the Big Guy. He had to work. That was all he knew. If he slowed down, he started thinking about it all. Like falling through a whole in time and space, plummetting to his death.

His head snapped up when he heard Arthur's voice. The smile that curved his lips was genuine, wide and he laughed, shaking his head. "Not my boss. He's just Fury. And he is the Dark Side. Why we all came running." He turned away from his work, facing Arthur. "Sorry for the scare. I mean, who makes a call like that when you're all dream time?"

There was a nervousness to his words, a hint of uncertainty for having told Arthur how much he cared for him on that voicemail. Or he felt he had said that maybe more directly than he had. Yet Arthur was here, wasn't he? That had to say something.

His lips curved up at his response, watching Tony for a long moment before he walked over to him. He stopped in front of him and just looked into his face for a long moment before leaning up and pressing a kiss to his lips.

Much like Tony, Arthur had never said those three words to anyone (other than his parents at one time or another). He had called Stark 'love' on occasion (more than one) but hadn't ever said 'I love you'. But he did. He cared more about Tony Stark than he had ever cared about another and in those moments of panic, not knowing whether he was alive or not, Arthur hadn't been sure what he would have said or done if faced with the reality that he had actually died before he had woken up on that plane.

"Don't be stupid," he said, his voice softer as he looked at him, seriously. He wished he had been able to answer that call. To hear his voice. "I care about you more than I have anyone for a long, long time," he admitted. Arthur was nervous admitting that but after the day the both of them had, it was worth saying.

And that was good. That meant things were okay, right? His hand slid along Arthur's collarbone, curling along the side of his neck and cupping the back of his neck. Just wanting him close, holding him to him and knowing they were both here, they were both alive. It had happened and they were okay. Both of them.

Then Arthur was speaking and he was hearing from him that he cared. A lot. He had come straight from Paris. Just to be with him.

"Oh right. Calling me stupid strikes me as love and caring," he teased, smiling though as he kissed Arthur. It was soft, a tenderness there he didn't often show. "Don't leave."

He said the words before he could stop himself, not even having realized he was saying it until the words were out there.

Arthur stepped in closer to the heat of Tony's body and wrapped an arm around him. They were alive and they were here together. After five long months of being separated.

His lips quirked up a little before returning the kiss again. It was a much different kiss than the ones they typically shared but it was in no means unwanted.

Admittedly, it took him a long minute to realize what Tony had said. He lifted his gaze to Tony's. "Don't plan to," he said. At least, for a while -- until he had a job to go and do. "Think I deserve a break as much as the next man."

Though, he had the uncanny feeling that Tony meant more permanently.

He had needed this more than he realized until that moment Arthur was tucked snugly into his arms. Dipping his head, he kissed him again, that same tenderness there, wanting him to know how glad Tony was to have Arthur in his arms.

Nodding, his arms tightened around Arthur. He wanted to say more but maybe now wasn't the time. Not with the building half blown away. Not with inception not even firmly in place, not confirmed with the actions having taken root. They hadn't even sent Loki back. Which made him think to ask...

"Tomorrow I have to meet with the team, with Thor and Loki. For him to take them back to their home. Want to have a look at what no one should ever be privy too?" Arthur got into people's dreams. Tony wanted to share the magic in his life. Literally in the case of Loki using the Tesseract to get beyond the destroyed BiFrost.

After the last several hours that they both had, this was just what Arthur needed more than anything. The kisses weren't too bad either. He smiled and kissed Tony again with a soft content sound.

The names were ones that he knew only in passing from any of the news sources he could get his hands onto on the plane to New York. Still, Arthur nodded. He knew Tony still had responsibilities so he wasn't that surprised. He was surprised however at the offer to see something that no one else probably will. Arthur was a appreciator of all technology, especially classified technology so of course he would want to see this.

He nodded. "What is it?"

It was a lot to have either of them dealing with, and Tony feared it wasn't ever going to slow down. Loki might just be the beginning, and his own personal life was going to begin to change if he was doing things such as taking Arthur to such debriefings. It was time to suck it up and live his life, as he wanted to live it.

"Oh just how a couple of gods travel through time and space. Probably will be anticlimatic as all get out but I won't miss the chance to see that bastard little worm taken away." He'd killed Coulson and Tony felt Loki owed his brother everything that they hadn't just slit his throat and been done with it.

"You don't have to go if you don't want to. I can meet you back here."
